- My first contact with Dr. Yih was as his student in EM 140, Hydrodynamics, in Fall of 1957. His enthusiasm for the subject and genial manner impressed me greatly. He was my teacher for the remaining fluid mechanics sequence (except for EM 141, ably taught by Walter Debler). He and his wife, Shirley, were gracious hosts to my family and me on several occasions many years ago. I regret having lost contact with Dr. Yih for so many years. His influence as a teacher remains strong.

It is with deep sadness that I just learned about the death
of a professor that has deeply affected me during my
schooling at the University of Florida. His lectures were
very inspiring to me. I never encountered someone that
gotten so involved in transmitting his knowledge to his
students. To his family, please accept my sincere condolence.
Good Bless him.

My favorite Professor Yih story: In the early 1960's a group of graduate students, dazzled by a simple and elegant Yih transformation which rendered a difficult problem routine, asked him how he had discovered it. He thought for a minute and responded in that innocent way of his, "It came to me as I was walking across the fields of Cambridge."
My sympathy goes out to his family. I will always have good thoughts about him and all that I learned in the good old days in EM at Michigan.

Gus was a wonderful teacher and mentor, whose voice and enthusiastic manner are still fresh in my memory. He and Shirley were a wonderful couple who added greatly to the life of the University of Michigan, and were always especially supportive of students and young faculty. We will all miss Gus very much.

I have treasured memories of Chia-Shun as a distinguished and
stimulating colleague at the U of M. My wife and I both recall
fondly the gracious hospitality (and the "two-Shirley problem")
of the Yihs in Ann Arbor. Our condolences to the family and
his colleagues.

It is indeed sad to have lost this wonderful friend and
remarkable engineer and applied mathematician; we feel
especially fortunate to have had a visit with the Yih's
in March, here in Tallahassee, just before their return
to Ann Arbor.
